WELLNESS COUNSELING

"As I focus on love, my fear will recede."

-Marianne Williamson.

Wellness Counseling is a therapeutic approach that works with mind, body, and spirit and helps developing the skills that will guide you through a path of higher quality in life.

Myers, Sweeney, and Witmer (2000) have reviewed literature from multiple disciplines since "wellness" is a concept that has been around for over 2000 years and they conclude that wellness is:

a way of life oriented toward optimal health and well-being, in which body,

mind, and spirit are integrated by the individual to live life more fully within

the human and natural community. Ideally, it is the optimum state of health

and well-being that each individual is capable of achieving.

Abraham Maslow (1970, 1971), studied common characteristics of healthy people and he stated that "a striving toward self-actualization, growth, and excellence is a universal human tendency and overarching life purpose".

Wellness counseling invites us to look at our possibilities not from the illness based model, but from a well-being perspective. It invites us to look at our own selves as whole individuals with bigger possibilities, than what an illness based approach may  let us see. Wellness counseling also invites us to explore those possibilities and to rethink who we really are from a frame of completeness, strengths, alternatives, including unknown areas of ourselves that also contribute to make us who we really are. Wellness counseling allows us to rediscover those areas of ourselves that for some reason have been hidden to our conscious self, and have not been integrated as part of our whole being. Therefore, wellness counseling promotes a process of rediscovering ourselves to become fuller human beings and to achieve overall wellness.

What will you get from wellness counseling at DYOS Counseling, PLLC?

You will explore your whole being from different areas: intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical, social and you will learn the ways you contribute to the current level of wellness in your life. Developing awareness of your skills, beliefs, thoughts, lifestyle, feelings, attitudes, etc. will help you to identify the level of wellness you would like to achieve. As a result of this process, you will be able to create and implement a plan to achieve a higher level of wellness and to feel overall better, healthier, happier but most of all to experience yourself "whole".

Who can benefit from this?

At DYOS Counseling, you can have wellness counseling in the companion of a group that like you, want to experience wholeness, or you can receive the services in an individual setting.

There are groups formed specifically for people that are experiencing life challenges due to a chronic condition like asthma, diabetes, high levels of stress, cancer, depression, arthritis, fibromyalgia, MS, among others. Within an environment that understands what you are going through, you will learn ways to cope with these life challenges from your own strength. This fulfilling experience will help you to get back the control of your life; recognizing the things you cannot change but willingly increasing the ones you can control and make changes over.

Who else can attend?

The same services are available to groups of people that are NOT experiencing any chronic condition but want to get more out of life and increase their wellness.

People on any of these groups will need an individual interview prior to participating in the group.

Both types of groups are available in English and Spanish.

Testimonial:

"In the wellness group, I learned to accept there are things I cannot change and to recognize that I can be in control of the way I respond to the different events in my life."
